SPH, SPH Foundation and Sphere Exhibits Honoured at Community Chest Awards

Singapore, 18 October 2013 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), SPH Foundation and Sphere Exhibits were honoured at the annual Community Chest Awards Presentation Ceremony 2013 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre this afternoon.

This is the fourth time that SPH and SPH Foundation have received the Corporate Platinum Award. It is the first award received by Sphere Exhibits, the events arm of SPH. The awards were presented by Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Social and Family Development, and Patron of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS). Community Chest is the fund-raising and engagement group of NCSS.

Every year, SPH and SPH Foundation work with Community Chest to identify 20 charities serving the needy elderly as well as disadvantaged children and youth for its annual charity cheque presentation. Based on Community Chest’s recommendations, SPH and SPH Foundation will make a combined donation of $400,000 to support the selected charities.

Besides the monetary donation, beneficiaries from the selected charities are also invited to the charity cheque presentation ceremony. Last year, about 180 beneficiaries and caregivers were treated to a concert called Drumming from East to West, at the Singapore Conference Hall. The concert featured the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and internationally acclaimed percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, who is hearing-impaired. Her acclaimed achievements and strong determination to succeed despite her disability is an inspiration to many.

SPH and SPH Foundation also contribute to other charities throughout the year.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation said: “SPH has grown and prospered with the community. We believe it is our responsibility to contribute to our society which has supported us all these years. We will continue to do our part to help the less fortunate around us, and we hope that others will also be inspired to do the same.”

For the first time, SPH’s events arm, Sphere Exhibits, was honoured with the Special Events Gold Award. It helped to raise funds for Community Chest through the inaugural Asian Masters Charity Dinner held at the Conrad Centennial Singapore on 9 November 2012. The Asian Masters Charity Dinner was part of a gourmet festival organised by Sphere Exhibits, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SPH.

The donation was raised through table sales, outright donations, a live and a silent auction where diners could bid for, among other things, special edition of wines, an Annam Private Dining Experience and a weekend stay at the president Suite of the Conrad Centennial Singapore. The funds raised were channelled to three sheltered workshops under the auspices of Community Chest, namely MINDS IDEA Employment Development Centre, APSN Centre for Adults and SCAS GROW. The Charity Dinner was attended by more than 200 guests and graced by Mr S Iswaran, Minister, Prime Minister’s office, and Second Minister for Home Affairs & Trade and Industry.

Mr Chua Wee Phong, Chairman of Sphere Exhibits, said: “Sphere Exhibits is privileged to contribute to the community through the inaugural Asian Masters Charity Dinner. The highly successful event had guests savouring gastronomic delights while doing their part for charity. We hope that the $280,500 raised and donated to the Community Chest will help improve the lives of the beneficiaries and instill a sense of giving in the society.”
